My path
was shaped by my personal experiences with midwifery assisted birth to Marina, Tamara, Kira, Jacob and Zoe,
a fascination with alternative healing and confidence in women's inherent power
to birth naturally. I
continually adapt in response to a woman’s needs and visions for her birth. I am honoured
and humbled by every family that I have the privilege to work alongside with
during this mysterious, awe-inspiring and transformational journey that results
not only in the birth of a baby but that of a mother, father, family and
community. I have a deep commitment to safeguarding every woman’s right to be
the main decision maker in her birth experience through an open exchange of information and a respectful,
non-authoritarian relationship. I take a holistic approach in providing care to
clients, incorporating complimentary therapies such as herbs, homeopathy, aroma
and nutritional therapy, and Lomi Lomi healing for those who have an interest.
I've worked
alongside childbearing women and their families since 1993; first as a doula and
since 2002, as a midwife in the communities of El Paso, Texas; Rankin Inlet,
Nunavut; and Edmonton, Alberta; attending over 150 births
during this time. I received my education and training
through the midwifery program at
Maternidad La Luz
; a recognized and highly reputable midwifery school and
busy birth centre practice in El Paso. I was honoured to work under 9 very
knowledgeable, compassionate and giving midwives/preceptors.
Together we served a predominately spanish-speaking, high-risk population.
In
homebirth practice
I greatly enjoy the relationships built through the
provision of care in the client's home. I hope to be a beacon amidst a
culture of fear surrounding childbirth, where parents can reclaim the trust in
the ability of women’s bodies to give birth naturally.
Blessings,
Geri
